Blucher was part of the Admiral Hipper class of heavy cruisers, and was completed just before the outbreak of war. Equipped with eight 8 in. guns and an engine capable of pushing the ship to 32 knots, Blucher was designed as a pure commerce raider. Secondary guns, anti-aircraft weaponry and torpedoes completed the the offensive power of this ship.
While leading an expedition to seize Oslo in the Norwegian campaign, Blucher was engaged by land-based coastal guns and torpedoes which eventually caused a fire that could not be contained. The subsequent magazine explosion sunk Blucher.
