Can't you create a new characteristic with your own name and interpretation? |

Well Social Standing is a perfect example.
This should never have been a characteristic in the first place given the way it is defined - not only is it too subject to change, it is extremely setting specific.
Since CT days, I've referred to this as Social Skill - since that is how it is mostly actually used anyway. (And the term Social Standing can be loosely equated to mean just that, so no real problems. Fortunately it wasn't called Social Title!)
I suspect this is a factor in having this rule in the SRD, in combination with licensing 'agreements' with MWM. |

The only thing you can't do under the TLL is change the names of the characteristics or describe how they are generated. So, yes, you can change the meaning of Soc if you wish, although the description in the SRD (a character’s place in society) is vague enough to fit into any setting. There is nothing to say you can't add your own characteristics, although I suspect if you replace all the characteristics in the TMB with your own you are in a grey area and Mongoose may not give you the license.
Note also that you are talking specifically about the Traveller Logo License, there. The SRD by itself, under the OGL, does not have these restrictions but does not allow (or require) you to use the Traveller logo on your product.
If in doubt and you are really planning to publish something, ask Matt - he's pretty good with responding to direct TLL questions. _________________ Spica: We Can Hear You Scream |

If you are planning on redefining characteristics and a number of other assumptions the core game makes, you might consider making it a stand alone game (aka not using the TLL). You are permitted greater freedom to do with ever you want and run less of a risk of people picking up the book thinking they can use it in their home traveller game and feeling cheated when there is little is applicable because to many of the core assumptions were changed.
Granted, a different FTL and a redefined Soc are no biggies and I wouldn't remove the logo for that, but that option should be presented for your consideration. _________________ Jon Brazer Enterprises- Bringing You the Future

If you are working on a setting that does not have noble titles, then redefining the Social Standing charactertistic FOR THAT SETTING is perfectly fine. Well within the SRD and the TTL licences.
But, you have to call it Social Standing or come up with a new characteristic. _________________ My friends call me Richard.

| I enjoy the Traveller rules, and had some ideas for a setting. But in this economy over in the US, I'd like to see if I can't get something published to maybe get some kind of paycheck in. Thus, the questions about the liscense. |

No problem. I think most of the people on this particular topic are interested in publishing material for money. _________________ My friends call me Richard.

| If you don't want to use nobility within your setting then you could relate social standing to affluence like for the US. Or you could base in upon some other form of social stratification. Though the labels and defining distinctions may change from culture to culture, the process of straftification always occurs somehow. |

It _has_ been started
We are going to need a little time on this one, as there are several projects up in the air at the moment. _________________ Matthew Sprange

Any hints in the meantime as to what the update will comprise? Pretty please? _________________ Spica: We Can Hear You Scream |
